The Character of an Old Elm Bonsai

This elm joined my collection in 2025, beginning a new chapter in a journey that had already spanned many years. Although it has only recently become part of my bonsai collection, it carries with it a rich history and a character that immediately caught my attention.

A Journey Across Europe

From what I know, the tree arrived in Ireland from mainland Europe around fifteen years ago. Since then, it has remained within the Irish bonsai community, passing between dedicated enthusiasts before eventually finding its way into my collection. I enjoy knowing that every custodian has added something to its story, and I now have the privilege of continuing that journey.

The Character of an Old Elm

One of the first things that drew me to this tree was its remarkable trunk. The deeply fissured bark immediately creates the illusion of a tree far older than it actually is. This elm is estimated to be around 35–40 years old, yet one of the fascinating characteristics of mature elms is their ability to develop ancient-looking bark relatively early compared with many other deciduous species. Even knowing its true age, it already possesses the presence and dignity of a much older tree.

Every ridge and crack in the bark tells a story, giving the tree a timeless appearance while reflecting decades of natural growth and careful cultivation.

Why Chinese Elms Are So Popular

Chinese elms (Ulmus parvifolia) have long been among the world's most admired deciduous bonsai species. Their vigour, resilience and ability to produce incredibly fine ramification make them ideal for bonsai cultivation. They respond exceptionally well to pruning, produce naturally small leaves and continue improving with age.

Perhaps their greatest strength is their versatility. Whether displayed in full summer foliage or as a leafless winter silhouette, mature Chinese elms possess an elegance that few deciduous species can match.

The First Year in My Collection

Since adding this elm to my collection, I have deliberately avoided making any major structural changes. Instead, I wanted the tree to settle into its new environment and regain as much strength as possible.

Throughout its first growing season with me, it has been heavily fertilised and carefully maintained through regular trimming to preserve its existing silhouette while encouraging vigorous, healthy growth. Sometimes the best decision is simply to allow a tree time to respond naturally before asking more of it.

Looking Ahead

Another feature I particularly enjoy is the old bark, which has gradually become covered in patches of moss. While the moss adds a certain charm and reflects the tree's age, it also conceals some of the beautiful texture beneath.

One of the next stages in its development will be to carefully clean sections of the trunk using a mild vinegar solution. This will gently remove the moss while preserving the delicate bark that has taken decades to develop, allowing the tree's natural character to become even more visible.

For me, bonsai has never been about making dramatic changes as quickly as possible. Sometimes the greatest progress comes from observation, patience and careful cultivation rather than styling alone. This elm already possesses qualities that simply cannot be created overnight—age, character and a sense of permanence. My role is not to reinvent it, but to guide its future while respecting everything it has already become.

I look forward to watching this tree continue its journey over the years ahead. Like every bonsai in my collection, it is not a finished work of art but a living one—changing a little with every season, growing stronger with time and gradually revealing even more of its character.
